On Tuesday morning, August 31, 2010, Adam Arling, 22 years of age, of Bradenton, was operating his motorcycle southbound on 46th Street West. It is believed that at the intersection of Manatee Avenue West, Mr. Arling ran the stop sign and collided with a vehicle traveling west on Manatee Avenue. Mr. Arling died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The impact was so severe it split his motorcycle into two pieces. Mr. Arling was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
It is a well documented fact that helmets can save lives. Proper riding gear can also reduce the severity of injuries. A person operating a motorcycle is more at risk of sustaining a serious injury than a person operating an enclosed vehicle. Unfortunately, a lot of drivers on the road fail to see motorcycles until it is too late. It is therefore up to the motorcycle rider to do everything possible to ensure his or her safety. Wearing a helmet, even if the rider is only going a short distance, is one way to reduce injuries and even possible death.
